'Til the sun punches

full title: 'Til the sun punches back

This was done several months ago through a poor mic -- I've got a new one now and will get around to rerecording this when I get done with any new stuff I'm working on. as it is, I had to do some pretty heavy filtering to get it to sound as good as it does, which resulted in a little "tinniness", especially on the vocals. Otherwise, just a little song about you know what. Enjoy

A Year on Ashland Avenue

Uploading the rest of my partially done songs to try and help spur me to re-recording them. Have at it.

The distance between your mailbox
and your front door
seems just a little longer today
than it ever has before

I wonder just how tired I'll be
when I reach that last flagstone
to see you looking down at me
but I can barely tell your home

Spend a year on Ashland and you'll
See what's on my mind
Feels just like it should
Feels just like it would
if you spent a year back home.

Andromache

I'm usually against instrumentals (especially ones that are obviously structured to be songs with vocals) but I've had this one lying around for a while that I never uploaded. There's a version I recorded a couple years prior that actually has the vox but it turned it just....just awful. Near the end there is actually a guitar solo, which might actually be the first time I've ever recorded an actual rock guitar solo.

Driving Broken Cars

This song is a bit of silliness that resulted from me trying to learn how to play bass.

I apologize in advance for that fact that I apparently am under the impression that I can sing the way I tried to in this "song".

enjoy :)

I see crabs at night

This is for a thread I am posting called FIRST and WORST, where some of the songwriters around here that have been writing long enough to have a pretty deep catalog at this point can have a laugh about their very first and their very worst songs. In many cases they will be the same song :)

http://forum.bandamp.com/The_Pit/22290.html This is the thread if anyone is interested

Anyway, this is my WORST song, recorded in 2001 sometime. It's about my uncle with Parkinsons. He, apparently, saw crabs at night. Which was the original lyric, but I chickened out at the end because I realized how stupid a chorus that went "I see crabs at night" would sound. In retrospect I should have left it in, at least then people might have thought this song was a joke :)

Edit: Jesus, OVER SIX MINUTES! I am offering cash prizes to anyone who can get through the whole thing.

edit 2: I think these lyrics are worth a look.

Sleep is my dream
Eve haunts me
feel the cold embrace
of obscurity
so I look back
on my tender days
before I was consumed
by this gray malaise

....But I see them at night
my love, they're coming from the walls
there goes Roger, Jim, and John
by now you know I've named them all and
when they're looking down at you and
me I know I'm wearing thin
I just want to find a place where
we can live in peace again

lines on your face
drawn upon my grief
I hunger to heal
as I crave release
but I can't leave you
with this image torn
so after all, forget this face
and remember how I was before

....But I see them at night
my love, they're coming from the walls
there goes Roger, Jim, and John
by now you know I've named them all and
when they're looking down at you and
me I know I'm wearing thin
I just want to find a place where
we can live in peace again

I always hated the way this song turned out, although I thought it was some of my better lyrics. But I'm just uploading finished songs from over the years for the sake of doing so. This one was written in 2001 and recorded in 2003.

Let it pass, Let it go

This is the first song I've recorded with my new equipment (AKG Perception 100 and Presonus TubePre)

The melody/progression is something I've been messing with for a while. The lyrics were a little cobbled together. I feel like I haven't done the song justice with my vocal delivery.

This is by no means a final version -- just wanted to get something recorded with my new mic! so have at it!

Once & Without You

I'm pretty happy with the way this turned out, except for my vox which aren't my best. I wrote and recorded this in one day (today, actually), except for the lyrics themselves which were left over from years ago. The person they refer to hasn't even been a part of my life in well over five years, haha. But I'm fairly pleased with how this turned out. Far from perfect, though.

once I was man
who knew what he wanted
once I knew a man
who'd never lie to you
why did you tell him to go?
to make him leave you alone
where did the flowers go this bloody spring

well I guess time has gone
woah, I wish it hadn't
but here we are
nevertheless
why did force me to drown
why did you keep me from reaching the ground
when will the time come
when I can say
this is our day
why can't this be our day

(inaudible whispering)

"I think that maybe you should look inside of yourself for answers
because there's nothing I can say or do that will make you change your mind
you can go if you want to
or if you feel like you need to
but don't expect me to be here when you get back"

why did you crush all my life
take me apart and put me aside
why oh why oh why?

my life's an open book full of words you never read
survey always says that I'd be better off alone
without you
without you.

Ride the Seas

This is my newest piece of work, rough recording #1. After repeated listenings I've decided it could use some soft harmonica during the verses and maybe some hammond-sounding keys throughout.

Any other thoughts?

The Bleakest Lie

Anyway, this is my FIRST song, recorded sometime in late 2000. It was pretty generic and right now I'm not even sure if it was about anything in particular. I'm almost positive I just made up the lyrics in one take as they were being recorded (at least for the first two verses). This is about as generic as it gets right here.

Just a little tune I did. I'm not thrilled with how the vocals came out, but alas. I'm thinking the sample might be a little too loud in the mix. Speaking of the sample, sorry in advance for it's clicheity.

When I Woke

In my continuing effort to upload basically every complete thing I've ever done (and hopefully, ultimately, use feedback to inspire me to write again), here's a track from a "concept album" I co-wrote with my college roomate in 2002. PC Mic recording, non-existent arrangement/mixing, and pretty weak singing. I also let my roomate play the "solo" at 2:00. It was not an improvement. I'm sorry :)

One thing I DO like about this song is the lyrics. And that it's part of our concept album :) as bad as the result was, I will ALWAYS be happy and proud of the fact that we put a whole cohesive album together.

Where youre gonna wake up

I can't possibly imagine what I was thinking, AND to top it off it's super low quality. It sounds like something commissioned by the marketing department for Levi's in 1988.

Kill me now.

This was my second entry under WORST for the FIRST/WORST thread I was trying to resurrect. Fire away!

In my continuing effort to upload basically every complete thing I've ever done (and hopefully, ultimately, use feedback to inspire me to write again), here's ANOTHER track from a "concept album" I co-wrote with my college roomate in 2002.

The thing this song is most in need of is a re-treatment. The idea wasn't that bad but the execution is horrible. I've since learned to not try and sing so low -- I just can't do it.
